For the very first time in Bangladesh, Google’s digital payment service, Google Pay, is about to be launched. This service will be introduced based on the Google Wallet platform, and it’s being officially brought to the country by City Bank, a leading private commercial bank. The launch is being made possible in partnership with global financial giants Google, Mastercard, and Visa. The official inauguration will take place on June 24 at a prestigious hotel in Dhaka.
Top dignitaries expected at the launch event include Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur, Governor of Bangladesh Bank, Tracy N. Jacobson, the U.S. Acting Ambassador to Bangladesh, and Hossain Khaled, Vice Chairman of City Bank.
According to sources, City Bank is going to be the first local bank in Bangladesh to be linked with Google Pay. Initially, only City Bank customers who own Mastercard or Visa cards will be able to use Google Pay through the Google Wallet app. However, in the future, more banks are expected to join, allowing their cardholders to enjoy this service as well.
Android smartphone users in Bangladesh can simply download the Google Pay app and link their City Bank cards. Once the setup is complete, they can make payments just by tapping their phone at any point-of-sale (POS) terminal where Mastercard or Visa cards are accepted. No need to carry physical cards—just your smartphone is enough.
This is made possible by a cutting-edge technology called tokenization, which Google Pay uses to protect your sensitive card information. Instead of sharing your actual card number during transactions, the system generates a unique token for each payment. This token is temporary and only valid for a single transaction. As a result, your original card details stay secure and are never exposed to third parties.
A senior payment gateway official remarked, “The biggest advantage of Google Pay is that you no longer need to carry your physical card—everything you need is on your smartphone.”
Another major benefit is that there are no additional charges or fees for using Google Pay. Whether you're in Bangladesh or abroad, you can use the app for fast, secure, and contactless payments with just a few taps.
Experts believe that the launch of Google Pay will bring a revolutionary change to the digital payment ecosystem in Bangladesh. It will play a significant role in pushing the country further toward a cashless economy, making financial transactions easier and safer for everyone.
Google Pay is a digital wallet and online payment platform developed by Google. It allows users to send and receive money using their mobile phones quickly and securely. The app works using technologies like NFC (Near Field Communication) or bank-linked payment systems.
With Google Pay, users can:
Make payments at shops and stores
Shop online
Send money to friends and family
Pay utility bills like electricity, gas, and internet
To use Google Pay, you need to install the app on your smartphone and follow a few simple steps:
Open the app and log in using your Google account.
Link your bank account, debit card, or credit card.
Set a security method like a PIN code or biometric verification (fingerprint or face ID).
Once set up, you can start making payments by scanning QR codes or using a phone number.
If Google Pay becomes linked with popular mobile financial services in Bangladesh such as bKash, Nagad, or Rocket, its usability will increase even more.
No Hassle Transactions
You don’t need to visit the bank or handle cash. Payments can be done from anywhere, saving both time and effort.
Instant Transfers
Transactions happen in real-time—money is sent or received within seconds.
Utility Bill Payments
Electricity bills, gas bills, mobile recharges, and more can be paid quickly and smartly.
Useful for Businesses
Small and medium shop owners can easily set up QR codes and accept digital payments. This helps reduce manual accounting errors and saves time.
No Fear of Losing Money
Carrying cash can be risky—there’s always a fear of theft or loss. With Google Pay, your money stays safe on your phone.
Rewards and Cashback
Often, users receive cashback offers and reward points by using Google Pay. These can later be redeemed for discounts or other perks.
One of the strongest features of Google Pay is its robust security system. Your personal data, card numbers, and balance are all stored securely in encrypted form on Google’s cloud servers.
Even if your phone is lost or stolen, no one can access your payment information because:
It’s protected by a PIN, fingerprint, or face unlock
You receive real-time transaction notifications
You can view and control your transaction history
Most importantly, Google Pay includes Google’s built-in fraud monitoring system to detect suspicious activities. In addition, it will follow all digital payment guidelines set by Bangladesh Bank, making it fully government-approved and regulated.
Regular Online Shoppers
People who shop frequently on e-commerce platforms will love the simplicity of Google Pay.
Small and Medium Businesses
Merchants looking for cashless payment solutions will find this app very useful.
Remittance Recipients
Those receiving money from abroad can enjoy faster and more secure transfers.
Freelancers and Gig Workers
Independent professionals working online will be able to receive payments more easily and efficiently.
The arrival of Google Pay in Bangladesh marks a major step forward in the country’s journey toward a smarter and more digital economy. With its simple setup, quick transactions, strong security, and potential integration with local services, it promises to transform the way we handle money. Whether you're a shopper, a business owner, a freelancer, or someone who wants to make life easier—Google Pay is a tool that can truly make a difference.
