Cumilla

Cumilla is the name of the city that is ready to welcome everyone with its glorious history, tradition, wealth, culture, natural beauty, and warm sincerity of its people. This city is like a fairy tale arranged in every layer.

Cumilla is the wonderful sandy beach of Gomti-Titas. A variety of information, anecdotes, legends, and generations of folktales can be found about the naming of this district, it is idiosyncratic and characterized by strong-weak dichotomies.

The word Cumilla is a regionally modified regional corruption of the region's original name Kamlanka (according to the Chinese traveler Wang Chuang, kia-mal-nokia), meaning pond of lotus flowers. The Cumilla region was once under the ancient plains. Later it joined the state of Tripura. In the 9th century AD, the Cumilla district came under the rule of the kings of the Harikela region. Lalmai was under the rule of the Mainamati Deva dynasty in the 8th century and the Chandra dynasty from the 10th to the mid-11th century.

Cumilla was once a part of the present-day Tripura state of India. In 1733 Nawab Sujauddin Khan of Bengal invaded the Tripura state and annexed its plains to Subah Bengal. In 1765 the East India Company captured Tripura and in 1790 the creation of the district was named Tripura during the company rule. Later, in 1960, Cumilla was separated from Tripura in present-day India and given status as a district.

There is also a legend that a famous person named 'Karimulla' lived in this village at that time. He was the leader of the village. It was the highest power and respectable position in the hierarchy of the then governance structure. It is believed that he named the village after him "Comilla". Previously spelled Comilla, officially changed to Cumilla from April 2018.

Cumilla is rich in the history of rivers, lakes, mineral resources, forests, mountains, pottery, khaddar, dairy products, Buddhist temples, ancient monuments, World War II memorials, and the history of ancient rulers.

Cumilla, the cradle of education-art-literary culture, is well-known in the subcontinent as a district rich in ancient traditions. Cumilla's Khadi industry, weaving industry, cottage industry, pottery, carpentry industry, ras malai, sweetmeats, Shital Patti of Mainamati, etc. still retain their individuality in their traditions. In the evolution of time, many things have come, and many things have been lost, but the sincere hospitality and social harmony of the people here have not been lost.

The famous sweet Rasmalai is made in Cumilla. Cumilla's Rasmalai is known throughout the country. This dessert is made with milk, chickpeas, and sugar. Its circulation started in Cumilla itself. Cumilla is also famous for producing other dairy products. Also, Cumilla is famous for its khaddar (khadi) industry. Banshipara of Srimaddi village in Homna Upazila of Cumilla. Khaddar has been prevalent in the region since 1921. Khaddar of Cumilla was very famous for industrial excellence. From here Khaddar cloth was sent to Calcutta and Bombay.

Patti's city is Cumilla. These patties were one of the commercial hubs of undivided India. Even after the partition of the country till 1965 these patties were dominant. 65 Later the trading area became limited. Later in the nineties, it became more narrow.

Cumilla is the bearer of ancient tradition in the spread of education. A UNESCO-listed historical archaeological site, the Shalvan Vihara in Mainamati was originally a center of Buddhist learning. Long before Begum Rokey promoted women's education, the first woman Nawab of the subcontinent, Faizunnecha Chaudhurani, established the school at Laksam in Cumilla.

Established in 1899 by Anand Chandra Roy Bahadur, Cumilla Victoria Government College is a unique example of a glorious educational center not only in the region but also in the whole of Bangladesh.

Before the establishment of Dhaka University in 1921, Victoria College was the only prestigious educational institution in the country. Public schools and colleges along with many other reputed educational institutions are constantly enhancing the glory of education in Cumilla. Also, the Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has ranked Cumilla as the highest among the 8 districts of the region.

On December 14, 1931, two students of Faizunnesa Girls' School, Suniti Chowdhury, and Shanti Ghosh shot and killed Magistrate Stevens. It was the first time that a woman participated in the freedom movement.

There are 2 industrial cities: Bisik and EPZ. Bakhrabad Gas Systems Limited also has its main facility and gas field in Cumilla. The 2nd largest vegetable market in the country is located at Nimsar in Cumilla. 

One of the largest and oldest cantonments in Bangladesh is located at Mainamati in Cumilla. At the end of 1942, Lieutenant General William Joseph Slim of the Defense Department of the British Army established the command post of 14 Army at Mainamati. Basically through this, the journey of the present cantonment started.

At a distance of 3.1 km from Cumilla Cantonment, there is the 'War Cemetery, the burial ground of soldiers who died during World War II.

The archaeological evidence here bears witness to Cumilla's traditional past. Many valuable antiquities and historical sites have been found in several places in this district. One such historical place can be found in the ruins of Lalmai Mainamati Hill. Traces of ancient civilizations have been found by digging in the soil here.
